Dinghy Sailing, Racing and Handicaps

The Sailing Committee is well aware and very concerned about the decline in Dinghy Sailing and Racing at the club and has been actively looking at ways of getting more support in these areas of activity. Most details are given below, but if you wish to know more specific details then please contact any member of the Committee.

The Dinghy Park appears to be well populated by a wide variety of craft, however not many are used regularly, if at all. The Sailing Committee are planning to survey the Dinghy Park usage this season to try and ascertain what boats are actively sailed and which are not in fact in use.

In order to make launching and recovery of dinghies easier and cleaner this year, we have arranged for the Hard to be regularly cleaned throughout the year, the new concrete area at the top of the hard improves the wash down area, and the drainage improvements along the ditch have made this part of the Dinghy Park more usable. Any comments you may w21 May, 2006hope these improvements will go some way to inspire some more dinghy sailing activity.

The Club at present has five adopted classes of dinghies, National 12, Wayfarer, Laser, Topper and Optimist, in 2005 a much welcomed increase in Laser numbers resulted in a request for a return to Class racing. As a result the Sailing Committee has programmed Class racing for the Laser Class in 2006 in addition to a Dinghy HandicapClass.

The National 12 Class appears to be very active away from the club on the "Open Meeting Circuit" where it seems to be very successful. However details of these activities does not seem to get reported back to the club, it is hoped that this situation will soon change and more news will be available in Lion Times, on the Web Site and in the clubhouse.

The Wayfarer Class has a large representation in the Dinghy Park, but on the water activity has recently been somewhat lacking. It is hoped that this year's class captain, Michael McKechnie, will be able to increase the racing, cruising and general club involvement of this potentially active and well-supported class.

The Junior Section is mainly comprised of Toppers and Optimists and is currently represented by Simon Ruffles. The Club has recently benefited from the generous donation by a member of 8 brand new "Oppie" dinghies. It is hoped that Family and Junior sailing days will get many more young children out in these boats. A current topic under discussion is what further Junior Class should be adopted by the Club.

Junior Sailing

Sailing for the Younger Members of the Royal Harwich Yacht Club

A Forum was held on Sunday January 15th at the Club to discuss Junior and Family Sailing. About 20 parents and juniors attended, and a lively and productive discussion resulted in a number of decisions.

To adopt the Lark dinghy as a 2 man boat for the older Juniors who are moving up from the Topper. Provided sufficent numbers (5 or more) are bought, then there will be class racing.

To concentrate on developing theFamily & Youth Club days on alternate Saturdays during the Summer when HW is around midday. This will involve daytime sailing, followed by a late afternoon Barbecue. On some Saturdays there should be an evening social event for Juniors.

To form the nucleus of a new "Junior Management Team". This group will consist of 2-3 adults and 2-3 Juniors. The Team will work to develop Junior sailing at the Club. Initial membership Simon Ruffles, Fiona Gerard, Andrew Swan, Jo Hunt and Jordan Green, the first meeting will be on 23rd February.

To hold a "Junior sailing Taster " day on Saturday 1st April, this being the first Saturday of the Easter holidays. There will be Lark and 420 dinghies available for Juniors to try out. We are also have RS Fevas, as these may be considered as a 2 man boat for the younger age group. Also on this day we will arrange a meeting for parents, with the objective of getting more parents of Junior members motivated and involved in supporting the Junior sailing. Without active parental support Junior sailing will not develop.

Wanted - "Racing Buoy Sponsors"

Are you able to sponsor one?

Maybe you know of a business willing to sponsor a large inflatable Racing Buoy for the Royal Harwich Yacht Club to use at Dinghy Open Meetings and Major Offshore Events?

These buoys are used at yacht and dinghy race start and finish lines, as well as for turning marks in the rivers, harbour and out at sea, so they are actually seen by a large number of people on the water as well as the competitors. They are often featured in photographs that appear in the Yachting Press, as they are always in a prime position where the action takes place, and as such are a prominent and interesting form of advertising.

The inflatable racing marks that the club currently possesses and uses for such events are now getting rather "tired" and some are now really beyond economic repair. We need to replace these important items of Race Management Equipment, but they are not cheap, so we would welcome any financial assistance with their purchase and in return we are willing to offer them as a useful advertising medium and platform.
